Kerala women are known for their beautiful lustrous hair that’s thick and dark. The two reasons behind this is their diet and secret hair oil. Fish is a main staple in Kerala as the availability of fish is plenty in the back waters. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in the fish is a must for healthy hair growth.

Their traditional hair oil does magic to their hair. The combination of herbal ingredients makes it so special, and turns your hair shiny and smooth. I learnt this hair oil recipe from my best friend’s mum who is a Malayalee. I have been using it ever since. It does wonders to your hair.
Treat Alopecia
Even if you have bald patches due to alopecia, this is the best natural option for you. You will see visible results in 1 week. This hair oil is suitable for those who have severe hair fall or if you have dandruff or premature greying of hair. Also if you have thinning hair, this oil does magic.
The natural ingredients that we are using in this home remedy are easily available. This hair oil is a special recipe from Kerala.
How to make the traditional Kerala Hair Oil
For making this special hair oil, take a handful of curry leaves in a blender. If you don’t get the fresh curry leaves you can also use the dried leaves. They are high in beta-carotene and protein content, which are vital in stopping hair loss. It also prevents premature greying of hair.
Jump to RecipeSoak 1 tbsp of fenugreek seeds for 4 hours, I am adding that too. Fenugreek or Methi seeds are great in removing dandruff and making the hair really soft. If you have scalp itching, this is a wonderful natural remedy for you.
Add 2 tbsp of hibiscus powder. If you get fresh hibiscus flowers you can use it too. You can use 4 fresh flowers. Hibiscus strengthens your hair roots.
Add 10 shallots or small onions to this. Shallots are the oldest home remedy for hair growth. They are rich in Sulphur, which helps in the production of collagen. This is very effective for hair regrowth in bald patches.
Add the pulp of a medium size aloe vera branch. Scoop out the pulp with a spoon or a knife. Aloe vera will reduce the dryness from your scalp. It nourishes the hair follicles so you will have faster hair growth. Your hair will be thick and strong.
Add a little bit of water and grind it into a fine paste.
Transfer it to an iron pan. I would recommend using an iron pan, it adds so much goodness to the oil. But if you don’t have iron pan, then you can use a steel pan. Avoid using any nonstick or aluminum pans.
Add 500 ml coconut oil and mix this. It’s important that you use good quality coconut oil for making this hair oil. It adds a lot of value to the quality of the oil. I’ve provided the link for good quality coconut oil at the bottom of this page.
Keep the flame low and boil it until the sizzling sound stops. It usually takes about 10 to 12 minutes in low flame.
Once the sizzling sound stops, add 10 to 12 black pepper corns. This will reduce the chillness it gives when you apply it on your scalp which will prevent you from catching colds. Boil it for a further 2 minutes and switch off the flame.
Once it cools down, you can filter it and store it a glass jar. This hair oil will keep fresh for upto 2 months.
Whenever you want to use the oil, take the amount of oil you need in a small bowl, and place the bowl over hot water to let the oil warm up. You need to massage this oil on your scalp for 3 to 5 minutes. Once you have finished massaging, let it stay for 30 minutes before you wash your hair.
