DIY Homemade Sunscreen With SPF 40 – Without Zinc Oxide

Summer is here, I hope you all are enjoying the Sun with your family. I am going to show you my DIY sunscreen lotion. I am making it without zinc oxide and its SPF 40. So it,s great on your skin.

My Love For Summer

I just love the amazing feeling that spring and summer bring after months of cold, chilly weather. We all love to spend time outside in the sun, I love gardening. but the only problem is getting sun burns, my skin gets flaky too because of too much exposure to sun.

I learnt this incredible sunscreen recipe from a friend of mine a few years ago. I have been making it ever since. These natural ingredients can do wonders to your summer skin care routine. It’s very simple to make at home.

Benefits of Natural Homemade Sunscreen

There are 3 benefits of using natural sunscreens.

  • You will avoid hormone disrupting chemicals
  • It’s super effective against sun burns.
  • It’s very cheap to make it at home when compared to the store bought ones.

Shea Butter

For the first step in the sunscreen lotion making, I take 1/4 cup of shea butter, and add it to a double boiler. Double boiler sounds so fancy, isn’t it? 🙂 I don’t have one. So what I do is keep a bowl on top of a pot of boiling water. That is my simple double boiler. SHEA BUTTER has got SPF 5.

Coconut Oil

It’s important that you use cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil to get the maximum Sun protection. I add 2 tbsp cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil – This has got SPF 10.

Beeswax

Then I add 2 tbsp of beeswax to it. Beeswax is optional, but it helps to make it into a lotion consistency and its great for your skin too. It makes the skin really soft.

Next I melt these ingredients in low heat, stirring occasionally. The beeswax will be the last thing to melt. We are not really boiling it, it will only take a couple of minutes for everything to melt together. Once it melts, take it out of the heat and let it cool down to room temperature.

It’ll look like this once it’s cooled. Then refrigerate this for 30 minutes. You want it to set a little bit but not be too firm!

It will look like this after 30 minutes of refrigeration, it has solidified but not too hard.

Carrot Seed Oil

I next add 1 tsp carrot seed oil. This has got SPF 35-40.

Cold Pressed Sesame Oil

Then goes 1 tsp of cold pressed sesame oil. This has SPF 2. Sesame oil is great for your skin, it protects you from radical damage as well.

I use 10 drops of lavender essential oil to scent this. This is optional, but trust me, you’re going to want to scent it. You can use whatever scent you like, but stay away from citrus essential oils, they are kind of photosensitive, so you may want to avoid those!

Just stir everything together! You can use a regular spoon for this. When you first start to whip it, it’ll look a little lumpy, but its ok. It will all come together. Keep whipping for about 2 minutes or until smooth. The mixture should look something like this when you are finished.

Storage

Now the final step is to store this sunscreen lotion in a jar. You can even carry a small container in your handbag. This natural lotion will stay fresh for months. There is no need for refrigeration. You can just take a small dollop and rub it on your skin. Apart from protecting you from sun damage and sun burn, it also nourishes your skin because of the lovely ingredients we have used.

Ingredients

  • Shea butter – 1/4 cup
  • Beeswax granules – 2 tbsp (Optional)
  • Cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil – 2 tbsp
