Reverse HASHIMOTOS, Auto-Immune disorders

This post is a complete guide to understanding Auto Immune disorders like Hashimotos and how to fix it naturally.

Do you have Hashimotos or Hypothyroidism?

Lot of people think they have hypothyroidism, but majority of them actually have Hashimotos. In this post I am going to explain what are the tests available to find out if you have hashimotos or underactive thyroid. And I am also going to tell you the natural home remedies to heal your hashimotos naturally without any medication.

Hypothyroidism vs Hashimotos

Thyroid is a problem, millions of people across the globe are suffering with, I had Hypothyroidism and I healed it naturally, without any medication just by following a thyroid friendly diet and lifestyle changes. There is one thing that everyone with thyroid issues should know. My question is are you being treated for the right thing? If you come under thyroid condition, then you may have hypo or hyper thyroidism. You can test this using TSH, T4, T3 and reverse T3 tests.

Autoimmune disorder

While millions across the world are being treated on lifetime medicine for an under active thyroid, many of them may actually just have hashimotos, an autoimmune issue and the healing for that condition is different, with greater possibilities to actually reverse and more importantly prevent the onset of other autoimmune issues like multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, skin issues like eczema, arthritic pains etc,.

Can you stop medication?

If you have hashimotos then the treatment is totally different from the treatment for thyoird issues. You don’t have to be on thyroid medication for a life time. I am not here to tell you that you can jump off your thyroid medication over night. No, you cannot come out of your medication all of a sudden like that. You first need to build that protocol in your system, change your lifestyle, which I am going to explain you in this post, and with the supervision of your doctor, as the levels get better, your doctor will slowly reduce the dosage to the smallest possible levels. And if your levels are still behaving the right way, then your doctor will stop you from your medication.

What are the tests for Hashimotos?

Right, first things first, lets see how to find out if you have hashimotos. There are 2 tests you need to do to figure out if you have hypothyroidism or hashimotos thyroid. They are 2 completely different kinds of problems. The symptoms are the same for these conditions. You need to do a test that is antibody test. They are Anti TPO (Anti-Thyroid-peroxidase) or Anti TG (Anti-Thyroglobulin). These 2 antibody tests will show you if you have auto immune disorder, hashimotos is a result of auto immune disorder.

What is Auto immune disorder?

Lets see what is this auto-immune disorder that causes hashimotos. First thing I want to explain what happens with hashimotos. If you have hashimotos, then your focus to heal it should be entirely on your gut. It’s because if you have a gut problem, you have hashimotos.

What has gut got to do with Hashimotos?

First lets understand how your gut works. When you eat food, it goes to your stomach and it travels all the way through your intestine to your gut. In your gut you have good bacteria and bad bacteria. You need both of them in right proportions. If your bad bacteria is more than the good bacteria, you will have problems. You will have acidity, bloating, improper assimilation of food. No matter how healthy you eat, your body is unable to absorb the vitamins from the food, you will have all of those issues.

The function of Gut Lining:

If you have more of the good bacteria than the bad bacteria, then your gut is in good condition. Separating your gut and your blood is a thin lining called gut lining. This is like a fishing net, with really teeny tiny holes. The food from the gut has to be absorbed by the gut lining and it will pass it on to the blood. And it’s our blood that carries this nutrients to trillions of cells in our body to function in the proper way.

But over time, by eating acidic food, junk food, constipation, poor eating habits and bad bacteria in the gut our gut lining gets inflamed. That small holes in the gut lining get larger and larger. When we have bloating, our bad bacteria is more than the good bacteria. This bad bacteria pokes holes in the fishing net.

What happens when Gut Lining holes are large?

Certain protein molecules, bacteria and chemicals enter our blood. They are supposed to exit out of our body. But since the holes are larger, they squeeze through and enter our blood. It’s not meant to be there in our blood. Now you immune system flares up and starts attacking these foreign invaders. Your immune system is doing the right thing to protect you.

Molecular Mimicry:

There is something called as molecular mimicry. Lot of these molecules mimic certain glands in our body. For some people they mimic the thyroid gland that is hashimotos, for some people they mimic the knees. All of a sudden your immune system starts attacking your knee joints, that is arthritis. For some people it attacks their skin, so we see eczeme, we see psoriasis .

What is Hashimotos?

In the case of hashimotos what happens is, your immune system finds out there are foreign invaders in your blood, which are not supposed to be there in the first place. So, it creates anti-bodies to basically fight them. Since the molecules mimic your thyroid gland, so your immune system starts attacking your thyroid gland. These anti bodies that was created by your immune system stays in your blood. This is exactly what happens with your hashimotos.

What is the root cause of Hashimotos?

Now you tell me how much of your thyroid medication is going to solve this problem? Symptomatically may be your levels in your test results will look a little better. You are just masking the bigger problem which is the GUT SYNDROME. Because you know your immunity starts in your gut. Everything is in your gut. Gut is connected with depression, anxiety, hormonal balance, your metabolism, energy levels and everything in human body is connected to gut.

Does your thyroid medicine heal your hashimots?

So if you go on popping those thyroid pills, your TSH will look good in papers, your T3 will look good. But think about what is happening to you when you have the gut problem. Are you healing your thyroid by doing it? NO. The next time you see your doctor, ask them if those thyroid pills cure your thyroid? It doesn’t solve your root cause, it just masks the symptoms. You will still have all the problems, fatigue, weight gain, hair fall, dry skin and everything. Today it may be hashimotos, tomorrow it could be arthritis. It could be multiple sclerosis. It could be any auto immune disorder because the root cause which is LEAKY GUT, which is your inflamed gut is not being focused on.

How to cure Hashimotos?

If your anti TPO and anti TG test results are high, you now know that your thyroid problem is caused because of your poor gut, because of your auto immune condition. If you focus on your auto immune condition by improving your gut health, guess what? the Auto TPO and Auto TG counts will decrease. As it reduces, the attack on your thyroid gland becomes lesser and lesser. Which means, YES there will be a day when you can get off your thyroid medication and you will be healed completely with the supervision of your doctor. It is as simple as that.

The SOLUTION:

Now that we have seen what is hashimotos and what causes it, let’s now see the solution to hashimotos.

1. Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Diet:

You need to get off gluten and dairy completely. Because those are inflamatory foods. You may not be intolerant to it. Lot of people do their food tolerance test and say I don’t have a problem with gluten or dairy. Yes you don’t have a problem with those. But remember they are inflamatory foods.
Any inflamatory food will affect the thin fishing net, the gut lining. So if you want to heal that gut lining, you have to remove inflamatory foods from your diet. So the number one thing is you get off gluten and you get off from dairy completely.

2. Fix your leaky gut:

Your gut lining is leaking the toxins, bacteria and protein molecules into your blood which should not be there in the first place. If you are constantly bloated, there is a chance you have a leaky gut syndrome. People who have grave’s disease, people who have gut issues need to check their TPO and TG count to ensure they are not leaking these anti-bodies into their blood. So, the idea is to seal that gate, rebuild that intestinal wall, your gut lining, so your own body relaxes your immune system and stops attacking you.

In order to fix your gut, you need to increase the good bacteria in your body. You need to increase the intake of Probiotic and Prebiotic foods to get a healthy gut. You don’t have to spend so much money to get those probiotic tablets. Probiotic and prebiotic is a science, you can’t go popping in those which will upset your whole system. You need the right balance of probiotic and prebiotic in your body.

2.1 Probiotics vs Prebiotics:

Many people don’t know what is probiotic and what is prebiotic. They just go and buy those over the counter probiotic pills and keep popping them everyday. Your body doen’t work like that. Probiotic is the good bacteria, where as Prebiotic acts as food for your probiotic, it feeds the good bacteria. They need to be in the right balance.

2.2 Powerful Homemade Probiotics:

You can make powerful, easy probiotic food in your own homes. They are very cheap and easy to make. Homemade pickes, fermented rice, kombucha and fermented vegetables are great probiotics. As I said you need prebiotics too to feed the good bacteria. Garlic, onion, banana, asparagus, homemade pickes are all great prebiotic foods. Pickle is both probiotic and prebiotic food. I am talking only about the good old homemade pickle, not the ones you buy from stores that contains preservatives. These pickles have to be made in traditional way. Eat a small bit of pickle with every meal, you will have a great gut.

3. Focus on Adrenal Fatigue:

When you are constantly stressed, your adrenal glands produce a hormone called Cortisol. Main function of adrenal glands is to produce cortisol. Cortisol is a good hormone, we need it to survive. We need cortisol to respond to stress. There are lot of hormones in our body that re adjust themselves when cortisol is produced. There are hormones that go up and there are hormones that go down. Our body does this to protect us, to go through that stressful period. Thyroid, liver, heart and everything is related to cortisol, they all respond to each other. They are dependent on each other. Cortisol is good, without cortisol we can’t live.

3.1 Chronic Stress:

I am not talking about stress for one or 2 days, I am talking about the chronic stress for days and months. When we are constantly stressed, we have more and more cortisol in our blood. So the gut lining automatically gets inflammed. This affects your skin, hair, your thyroid and everything else. You need to look at the health of your adrenals, which means meditation, letting go of things, taking things slowly and not stressing about things in life. That’s where Adaptogenic herbs like Ashwagandha and Holy Basil come in handy. These are amazing herbs which help your body to deal with stress much more effectively. These herbs reduce your stress and heals your adrenal glands.

3.2 Adaptogenic Herbs:

I take 1/4 tsp of Ashwagandha powder mixed in warm water in the morning an hour before breakfast. And 1/4 tsp of Holy Basil powder mixed with warm water in the evening before dinner. You can even make tea with holy basil leaves and add a tsp of honey, that makes an excellent drink to de-stress yourself after a hard day’s work. This helps me to deal with my stress and make me more energetic. The quality of these herbs is very important for you to get the full benefits from it. I will give you the links of ashwagandha and holibasil that I use, I will update it at the end of this post if that helps you.

4. Good Digestion:

The 4th point you need to focus on is your digestive health. If you are constantly eating acidic food, if you are not managing your micro biome, if you are not balancing your probiotics and prebiotics, if you are constantly bloated, YES you are going to have inflamed gut. You need to start your healing process in your gut, if you have hashimotos. According to Ayurveda, ghee or clarified butter plays a major role in healing your inflamed gut. Ghee is made from dairy, but it has different qualities. Ghee can help heal your digestive tract. You may be eating the best diet in the world, but if you have poor gut then your body cannot assimilate the food you eat. Good digestion is the key to good health, ghee nourishes the cells of your intestines. I take 1 tsp of ghee everyday with my breakfast or lunch. When you eat ghee, always add it to hot food. I normally use it in my hot porridge or dal and rice, or millet rotis.

Conclusion:

So the first thing for you to do is, find out what thyroid problem you have. If it is hashimotos, you need to follow a hashimotos protocol and work on your gut. Because if you don’t fix your gut, you will have low immunity, inability to lose weight, hair fall, dry skin and you are not getting the right nutrients to your body because of poor gut. No matter how healthy you eat, if you have poor gut, your will not assimilate the food and extract nutrients from the food you eat.

If you are on medication, take the medication as a crutch, but remember whatever medicine you take, it will have side effects at some point or the other. Your body has the intelligence to heal on its own if you give it the right kind of nutrition and rest. So get your Anti-TPO and Anti-TG tests done. If it is positive, you know you have hashimotos, you can work on your gut to heal it. Good luck!
